Four Things I Found Interesting This Week
I hate a generic title for a blog post but I didn’t know anything else to say. These are just a few things I found interesting this week that I don’t want to develop into full-fledged posts, but think they’re worth passing along.
Yahoo! announced their most searched terms of 2008. Be on the lookout for Google’s list coming soon. It’s always very different from Yahoo’s list. (HT: Keystone Business Solutions blog)
Why aren’t more marketers using widgets? This was an interesting article about the usefulness of widgets. Personally, I’m seeing there are two views on widgets these days. Some people see them as the evolution of banner ads. Other people see them as e-commerce opportunities. I lean toward the latter idea and think MediaForge is doing a great job with this.
Traffic is more important than search rankings. This is an interesting article about how Google’s new SearchWiki may change the face of search engine optimization and that in the end, traffic will be the most important thing. It’s an interesting perspective and one that could shake up the SEO world a bit in the future if it plays out this way. In the end, I always say content is the most important thing because good content can help you gain and retain traffic. This is also a good reminder why I don’t enjoy the world of SEO.
The song “Last Christmas” has an entire website dedicated to it. This site has been tracking all the versions of the song for the last three years, and to date there are 334 versions. What did we ever do before the Internet? (HT: Alison Groves via Twitter)

Bill,
I LOVE the idea of using widgets to generate eyeballs and impressions. Widgetbox has an easy to use widget for packaging your blog. http://www.widgetbox.com. I use it for Transparent Christian Magazine, and have had it available as a download on Widgetbox, and my own site for a year. 122 downloads so far and over 35,000 impressions.
Also, I have found Sproutbuilder to be an excellent tool for promotion. I just built one for my buddy Korby Lenker that has a show in Nashville next week. I put it on my MySpace site, and although I don’t like the ‘placement’ of it right now, I LOVE the widget. I dropped in videos, a date for his show, and a music player. I could have added a countdown clock and a slide show. Lots of features. Plus, his fans can put it on their websites, MySpace, Facebook and a whole host of other sites.
You can take a look at: http://www.myspace.com/transparentchristian
Great post as usual Bill!

Thanks Jason. I’ve never used Widgetbox but have used Sproutbuilder a few times. Thanks for the comment.
