The Other Reason February 14 Is A Big Day

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

MySliceofPiYou know February 14 is a big day but I expect you don’t know that it also signifies something else…that it’s only one month until Pi Day. You know of Pi Day don’t you? March 14? 3/14? Pi = 3.14? It’s legit, I promise.

To prepare for your Pi Day celebration you can purchase your very own slice of Pi. If you don’t know why you would use it, check out the Pideas page. To date 120 slices of Pi have been taken and as of the time of this posting, there’s only one digit to be purchased before another free one is up for grabs to the quickest clicker.

One Thing Bloggers Will Love About Your Website

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

I hadn’t been blogging for too many months when I realized most websites weren’t built with the notion that there may be a way to help a blogger out. That realization birthed the “three ways to get bloggers to hate your website” post. Ever since then I have sought to make sure websites I am a part of are blog friendly. Early last year I co-created MySliceofPi.com and we dedicated an entire resource page to bloggers (and any other media who might be interested.) The intention of the page was to cater to the image needs bloggers might have if they chose to write a post about the site. Since then, I have recommended similar pages to clients and over the summer one client, Modern Parables, took me up on it. They created a blogger/media page with multiple options for their logo, images from the product, images from their original films, embeddable video links, and movie stills.

They went all out and it’s been helpful to the numerous bloggers who have written about their resource. In fact, today they received a note specifically about the blogger/media page:

“I am SO impressed. I just went to your web site and downloaded and saved the images in less than a minute. That has to be the easiest time I’ve ever had finding and saving images. Woo hoo!!!!!”

Getting a page like this up on your organization’s site isn’t difficult. You just have to take a little time to do it. Bloggers (and other media) will love you for it. When’s the last time your site got a woo hoo?

Some Pi after Thanksgiving

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

It’s been a while since I talked about MySliceofPi.com so if you’re not familiar with it, you may want to get yourself a little post-Thanksgiving Pi. The Pideas page will give you some thoughts on how to use your slice (or slices) of Pi. If you want to follow the Pi message through your RSS reader, just subscribe to mysliceofpi.com/rss.

One funny slice I saw today was digit 114. I don’t know who Rom’s Mom is but that’s a funny picture. I also see that Denver and the Mile High Orchestra got a free slice once. If you’re not familiar with them check out Fox’s The Next Great American Band.

As of this posting, the next available digit is a 3 followed by a 0…so someone’s going to get two digits for $3 if they move fast enough.

Joost invites, More Mac vs PC, Copyrights, and more

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Myriad items for you today…

I wrote about Joost recently and today I got an email from them that says I can invite anyone who wants a Joost invitation (it’s still invitation only to download the player). If you want one just let me know in the comments or email me.

My friend Tom at Community Christian Church sent word that there are two more of their Mac vs. PC parody videos online now. You may recall that I interviewed Tom in December while there was some online controversy about their original Mac vs PC videos.

Greg Atkinson of the ChurchVideoIdeas blog told me a few days ago that he and Anthony Coppedge have released a podcast on churches and copyright laws. It’s worth a listen if you’re on a church staff or volunteer in a ministry at your church that deals with any media.

Frank from StrategicDigitalOutreach just let me know about a new website he was part of creating called MissionEquip. MissionEquip was built to provide productivity tools to equip Christian missionaries worldwide in evangelism and discipleship.

MySliceofPi is now selling it’s 100th slice! For longtime readers, you’ll recall that I launched this site with a friend two months ago. It’s been interesting to see it go. We’re always looking for feedback if you have suggestions.

Free Pi for new readers!

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

There are several new people checking out MicroExplosion right now due to my post on ChurchMarketingSucks.com yesterday. As a way of thanking you for checking out this blog, I’d like to give you a free slice of Pi from mysliceofPi.com. So here’s the deal, the first ten new MicroExplosion readers to email me (fourthbill@gmail.com) with a Pi request will get a code for a free slice of Pi.

If you’ve been a faithful reader for a while I don’t want to leave you out either, so the first five regulars to email me will get a free code also.

Everyone be sure to note if you’re a new reader or a regular. Also, if anyone includes a really good Pidea we’ll post it to the list and I’ll give you another free Pi code.

Video of the Week: The Gift of Language

Friday, March 16th, 2007

I discovered this video on the blog Media:nation Station via slice 23 on MySliceofPi.com. (Shameless plug, I know…but hey, I really did find it that way!)

This video is certainly not politically correct…but that’s where the humor is.

Here’s the link for the feed readers (and feed emails):

My Slice of Pi update

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

Last week I talked about the launch of a new project I’m part of called MySliceofPi.com. One of the things we saw quickly was that the very people we think will use MySlice weren’t interested because the price was out of their range. Today we dropped the bottom out of the prices so it’s accessible to many more people. The new prices are simply the value of the number, meaning a five is now $5 rather than $50. Whereas the cheapest number to buy was $10 in the previous version, the most expensive one is $9 under the new price structure. We saw an immediate jump in slices after that change today so that was all the affirmation we needed.

In case you’re wondering, we did automatically refund the difference in price to anyone who purchased under the old pricing model. Also, for those of you who may be using Twitter, I think MySlice could serve as a shorthand reference (since you only get 140 characters per post) for you if you want to quickly reference something you can say “Pi” and the people would learn that you’ve got something for them to see on your digit. So instead of Twittering, “check out my tumble log” and providing a link I could just say, “Pi5″ which is translated “go to mysliceofPi digit 5 to see my message and link.”

Diversion: My Slice of Pi

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

I’ve been working on something with a friend for the last couple months called MySliceofPi.com. MySlice is going to be an interesting experiment in online property. Think of it as a little online billboard an owner maintains with a message and link of their choosing. We expect some people will see a monetary and/or promotional value in this to promote a product, blog, website, service, organization, etc. Others may use it as a messaging system to make a simple public statement…maybe something that makes sense to everyone or perhaps something that is really only for their friends to understand. We’ve come up with a bunch of ideas (“Pideas” actually) for ways people may use this.

We’ve already had some questions about why a digit is purchased rather than given away. The answer is twofold. First, we’d like to make some money off this. I’m personally planning to give 100% of my share to my church for at least the first 2000 digits that sell. The second reason is that if this thing takes off then the people who got in early will have something of a higher value than the people who got in later and the money is a barrier to people erroneously claiming a bunch of digits and turning this into a massive spam page. We have, however, made some digits free for the taking. All the zeros are free so check the site regularly to see when the next zero is available.

We know people have lots of ways to communicate online. We’ve got MySpace profiles, blogs, instant messages, YouTube, Facebook, email, photo sharing, etc. Sure, you don’t need another way, but we think there will be some people who’ll gravitate to the unique nature of this and get on board. If you’re one of those we encourage you to grab your slice of Pi.
